Being imperfect is the
native and probably the only common characteristic of humans after their
ability to commit an error. There is something fundamentally flawing about
humans that help us relate to others. Some of us are fortunate enough to have problems
that can be easily cured like eyesight problems whether it is myopia or
astigmatism. Most people might know what myopia is but…
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a refraction error of the eye
caused by the irregular size of the cornea or the internal lens. Naturally, the
cornea and the internal best coloured contact lenses
of the human eye are a perfectly round sphere but a person suffering from
astigmatism will have an abnormal shaped cornea or lens or in some cases, both
are irregularly shaped i.e. like an oval. It can be present in the patient from
birth or hereditary. The rods and cones at the back of the eye are unable to
receive the light reflecting from the object as the light bends improperly during
its journey to them. It is different than myopia hyperopia as you can’t see
properly at any distance. This problem has the tendency to increase with age.
The good news is that astigmatism can be easily
treated with a pair of specially designed contact lenses. There are a few kinds
of contact lenses that can be used for this purpose as follow.
Toric contact lenses:
Toric contact lenses are the most common kind of
contact lenses that are being used worldwide to treat astigmatism. These
contact lenses are usually designed with silicone or silicone hydrogel material
meaning they are soft and easy on the eye. Toric contact lenses treat this
problem with varied refraction and stabilized design. These contact lenses are
available in types from dailies to monthly disposable. These contacts have a
slight problem, they rotate with the blink of the eye or the posture of the
head as a result daily disposable contact lenses are the most recommended among
the lot.
Some of the most commonly used toric lenses for
astigmatism are
Acuvue Oasys, Bioinfinity Toric, Dailies
Aquacomfort Plus Toric, Proclear Toric, Baush+Lomb Ultra for astigmatism.
These contact lenses are being used widely to
treat astigmatism but there are other kinds of contact lenses as well that work
even better than toric in some cases.
Gas Permeable Contact Lenses:
Gas permeable contact lenses or in short RGP cheap colored contacts treat
both corneal and lens astigmatism by creating an artificial cornea and reshaping
the cornea to its natural spherical shape optically. These contacts are more
rigid than toric so they don’t rotate with the blinking of the eyes. One issue
with RGP contact lenses is that can be irritating for some people.
Hybrid Contact Lenses:
RGP contact lenses are hard on all sides making
them uncomfortable for some people but hybrid contact lenses are softer on the
side and hard at the center, so they bring the good of both worlds together.
They cure astigmatism in the same way as RGP contact lenses but without the
discomfort.
Scleral contact lenses:
The sclera of an eye is the white part of the
eye that we can see. As the name suggests scleral cheap eye contacts cover
the white area of the eye so they cover the entire front of the eye. They are
large in size, therefore, they avoid contact with pain-sensing nerves of the
cornea making them comfortable.
